Gateway Trail Models: The Sara Babb Project
In July 2008, Paulding SORBA initiated the original Memorandum Of Understanding, (MOU), with The City of Dallas, GA for, what was known then as "The Sara Babb Project." We were initially hosting a 3 day work party aptly named, "Community Make Over", where 9 area churches joined forces to tackle over 100 community projects in and around Paulding County.
We were set to host 100+ volunteers over the 3 day weekend, July 25th, 26th, and 27th at Sara Babb to construct our 1st actual mountain bike park. We had over 3 miles of trail pin flagged and had day to day action plans set up to make this project a success. Late in the afternoon on Friday, July 25th, 2008 we received word from the City Manager that we had to "Cease and Desist" and that we wouldn't be allowed to continue as planned. Dave Senecal met with the City Manager and negotiated a compromise.
On July 26th we initiated one third of the original work we intended to complete, as over two thirds of the trail we had originally laid out wasn't on city property after all. Over the 3 day weekend we actually built a 1 mile beginner specific loop, 4 bridges, and 1 kiosk.
We celebrated this victory but never really slowed down because of the abundance of MOU's and the amount of work created by these MOU's. September 2009 brought on an enormous amount of devastation to the Atlanta area, and Sara Babb was affected as well. The entire park was submerged in water, sand, and a large amount of sewerage caused by an erupted pipe from a lake, located behind the park, bursting its dam.
Paulding SORBA never gave up on The Sara Babb Project, just re-directed our energies to numerous projects throughout Paulding and West Cobb. The City of Dallas made a recent announcement about acquiring the (Green Space) land necessary to continue growth for this park. They announced their intent to utilize professional builders to design and build the multi-use, natural surface trails that would meander throughout the newly acquired property.
We unfortunately had allowed the original MOU to lapse which surprised us quite frankly. We have since started submitting open ended MOU's and we are excited to announce the signing of a new MOU for Sara Babb. We are currently awaiting receipt of the new maps; corner marker coordinates and restricted areas. This park is full of history; both Civil War entrenchments and abandoned moonshine stills can be found on this property. Sara Babb will follow suit as one of our Gateway Trail Models and allow riders the opportunity to ride based on their abilities. We have slightly more land than Mt. Tabor host so we're hoping to allow these trails to have longer flowing lines. There is also terrain here; meaning climb fest and fast flowing down hills will prevail.
We'll keep y'all posted of things to come, until then Dig, Ride, Smile!
